Nim is traditionally played with heaps of small objects such as stones, matches, or poker chips. It's one of the first games to be completely solved mathematically; in other words, for any Nim position its possible to calculate whether there's a winning move, and what it is.

Nim is important in the mathematics of games because many more complex games can be analysed by reducing them to an equivalent Nim game.
